Afripreneur started as a facebook group on January 1, 2011 @ https://www.facebook.com/groups/Afripreneur/ . The initial idea of Afripreneur was to create a magazine online and offline for them to be able to read the right practical business content which will help them set up and grow. Based on the experience of the founder in setting up businesses, he believed back then that it was always much cheaper and more effective to build a market before launching a product; he decided to launch a facebook group as a cost effective experiementation ground online in a place where we had the largest gathering of people.

As a side project for the entrepreneurship magazine and advise from two friends too, he decided to register Afripreneur as a separate business name under his Avatar Media and Technology Nigeria Limited which was setup to create business innovations to be deployed to organisations to make their businesses more efficient and improve bottomline.

After few months of working on the Afripreneur group with membership over 10,000 members in 2011, the Afripreneur team started to realise that the needs of entrepreneurs far surpassed the intial magazine plan. It was then the team had to begin another round of extensive research on what and what is really needed, why is needed, how will it be done, how will it be self-sustained, how should be tested and how should it be deployed. The team members also had to do the necessary personal development as well as get the needed training and education to recreate, manage and grow what Afripreneur will be.

In 2012, Afripreneur had monthly meetups organised between February 2012 and September 2012 which served as the first offline point where feedback was received from entrepreneurs. Two tradeshows where organised at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos in December 2012 and March 2013 having a mix of large organisations and growing entrepreneurs. The two events also served as an eye opener of the realities of getting things done in the real world for entrepreneurs and large organisations.

After months of research, beginning from late 2013, extensive development and innovation began on the data and experience gather of the previous months. The Afripreneur team started creating and testing innovations which lasted until late 2014.

In early 2015 when the decision to begin final commercial operations was made, we had to move the various innovations from pilot capability to something that would be able to handle operations on a commercial scale. Due to very limited resources and hands, this took another one year till the end of 2015 when some innovations are ready to go to market and would be made live to the public on January 1, 2016 when Afripreneur will be 5 years after the idea and first day of commercial operations.

It might have looked like we are 5 years late but we always belief when the Afripreneur idea started 5 years ago, it was 10 years ahead of its time and as we commence commercial operations on January 1, 2016, let it be known that we are still 5 years away from its time; this is about offer entrepreneurs a taste of the future in 5 years today.
